Pilates and IMT

The history of Pilates
Pilates is a toning and alignment technique created by Joseph H. Pilates (1880-1967).
It is an approach to fitness that develops balance, strength and flexibility with the goal of improving endurance, posture, movement control and mobility for optimal conditioning and ease of movement. Each Pilates exercise is carefully structured to strengthen and stretch complimentary muscle groups simultaneously in order to enhance the articulation and deep muscular support of the spine. This increases range of motion, and improves core strength and co-ordination.

What is Integrated Movement Therapies (IMT)
IMT is a synthesis of complementary approaches to movement education and somatic practice. IMT is based on Laban Movement Analysis and The Bartenieff Fundamentals, with influences from Yoga, dance, Tai Chi, the Alexander/Mitzvah technique, as well as studies in biomechanics. IMT is a unique combination of the essential principals found in these movement systems and has been integrated by Ms. Danielle Bélec founder of Integrated Movement Therapies (IMT)® and Director of Second Wind Pilates Plus® Studio.

The overall intention of IMT is to assist clients in re-patterning movement habits and movement choices that may be hindering function and personal expression. The goal is to help individuals realize their full movement potential.

Equipment offered at Pure Pilates

The Reformer
The Reformer is the most popular and versatile piece of Pilates equipment. The Reformer facilitates an extraordinary range of strengthening and stretching exercises. The Reformer has a carriage that glides on rails, in response to the use of attached springs, pulleys and ropes.

The Cadillac
The Cadillac was originally devised by Joseph Pilates to rehabilitate bedridden patients back when he was working as a hospital orderly. The apparatus has evolved a bit since the makeshift bed spring days, but its inspiration is apparent and it continues to be a bridge between exercise and physical therapy.

The Combo Chair
The Combo Chair is a split chair peddle, for a powerful workout, combining strength, coordination and balance with rotation and reciprocal exercises. The focus on upper and lower body strength and conditioning makes it a great piece of equipment.

The Step Barrel (Spine Corrector)
You will appreciate the comfort and ergonomics with its gentle curve and rounded step. The Step Barrel can be used to perform a wide variety of exercises to lengthen and strengthen the torso, back, shoulders and legs.

Pilates Barre
The Barre Technique was founded by Lotte Berk, a russian dancer who developed a protocol for her own rehab after a serious spinal injury in the 1940's. The use of the ballet Barre in conditioning has become widespread in Pilates studios where form and precision are emphasized. Working at the Barre gives you a sense of center and balance while performing small isometric movements for each muscle group. Particular attention is given to the arms, seat, hips and abs.
